Arthur's Story.
Birkenhead News 10 May 1916Port Sunlight Bandsman Hero.
Former “News” Compositor.
Mrs. Margerison, of 73, Bolton Road, Port Sunlight, has received the sad intelligence that her fourth son, Bandsman Arthur Margerison, Cheshire Regiment, has been killed in action.
This young man – he was only 32 years of age – was a compositor serving his time at Messrs. Lever Bros., Ltd., and afterwards being employed by Messrs. Willmer Bros., and Co. Ltd. He was a very prominent member of Bebington St. Andrews A.F.C., having played outside left for a number of years. He was also a keen member of the Bebington Church Lads’ Brigade, and was an expert performer in the brass band belonging to the Company.
From a friend in the deceased’s Company Mrs. Margerison has received a letter expressing his and the Company’s sympathy. He writes :- “It is with regret I write these lines to tell you that Arthur has been killed, he being wounded on the 25th April and passing peacefully away at one of the clearing stations near us. We will have a cross put over his grave … He had little pain. In the few minutes he was conscious he asked me to let you know about him. We feel his loss very much especially in the brass band, as he was a good player … Arthur was always cheerful, and always shared the contents of his parcels. Bill Forsey was killed and Colin Forsey wounded the night before Arthur was killed.
