Charles's Story.
Born Haslington, enlisted Chester. Son of Edward and Matilda Bowden of Slaughter Hill, Crewe. Previously employed as an assistant to Mr Harper, Ironmonger of Crewe, where he had worked five years. Was regarded as the expert grenade thrower of the battalion. Embarked from Folkestone to France (Boulogne) on July 19, 1915. Accidentally wounded by a bomb on August 9 and died next day. Listed as Corporal on the Haslington War Memorial. Served as a Lance Corporal and Acting Corporal on MIC, but was a Private at time of death.
