Frederick's Story.
Birkenhead News 29 May 1915
Loss of the “Goliath”.
LOCAL MARINE A VICTIM.
The sad news was received from the Admiralty on Saturday that it is feared that Private Fred Keilaus, of the R.M.L.I., R.N.R., was lost on H.M.S. Goliath in the Dardanelles on May 13th. He was 35 years of age on the 20th May, and a Tranmere boy, having been educated at St. Catherine’s School. He joined the R.M.L.I., when quite young, and served two years in the South African War, receiving the Queen’s medal with six clasps. Since his marriage six years ago he had lived at Seaforth and been employed by the White Star Line. He was a great favourite with all his fellow-workmen. Private Keilaus was called out on the outbreak of the war, and had not been home since. He was once drafted to the Goliath, and saw fighting in East Africa. In a letter which his wife received on May 17th he stated they were in hot quarters fighting day and night. The Commander’s cabin was struck, but luckily for him he was not in it. Private Keilaus leaves a wife, who is a daughter of Mr. John Davies, the well-known coal merchant, of Rock Ferry and Tranmere, and two little sons, the youngest of whom was only three weeks old when his father was called out. Very sincere sympathy goes out to them, and also to the gallant marine’s aged father, sisters and brothers.
