Bernard Grimshaw's Story.
Born Leeds, January 19, 1899. Only son of Gertrude Ineson of 250, Ruskin Road, Crewe. Educated at Edleston Road and Higher Elementary Schools, Crewe. Prior to enlisting on January 19, 1914, worked as a telegraph messenger. Joined his first ship, the Powerful on June 8, 1914. He would go on to serve on the well-known British ships Impregnable, Defiance and Iron Duke before joining the Barham on November 1, 1915. At Jutland the Barham, of the 5th Battle Squadron, suffered at least two direct hits and was heavily involved in the action, but did not sink. Casualty records state that Bernard was killed while sending a message, after the wireless room was hit by a shell.
