Birkenhead News  04 August 1917

DEATH OF CLAUGHTON SOLDIER.

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Kendrick, of 7, Rimmer’s Court, Claughton, that their son Lance-Corporal John Kendrick, was killed in action on July 22nd, 1917. He enlisted in December, 1916, and returned home wounded in May, 1917. He joined the Denbigh Hussars, and was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was full of excitement and ambition, and was always cheerful under any circumstances. In a letter from his Officer, he states that Lance-Corporal Kendrick died a hero’s death, and his Chaplain states that he was buried in a pretty little Cemetery, in the outskirts of a shattered Village. Several of the Regiment were present at the funeral. He spoke very highly of Lance-Corporal Kendrick, who was much respected by all who knew him. Deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Kendrick in their sad bereavement.
