GALLANT ROCK FERRY SOLDIER
Killed in Action
Another name to be added to the roll of honour of the old boys of Rock Ferry Higher Grade School who have sacrificed their lives in the great war is Private Alfred Manley. The news was conveyed to his wife, who resides at No. 1, Nelson Road, Rock Ferry, by a letter from his officer, who writes :- “I hardly know how to word the Company’s letter of condolence to you over the loss in action of your husband. He was in the front line of his Company all the way up till he was killed. Your husband was a brave and fearless soldier, and the Company while mourning his death is proud to be able to place on its honours list such a heroic man as your husband.” Private Manley was killed on the 26th March during the operations in Egypt. He was 31 years of age, enlisted at the outbreak of war in the Cheshire Regiment, and had been through the operations at Gallipoli, where he was stricken down with fever. After spending some time in this country recuperating he volunteered for active duty again, and was drafted out to Egypt to join the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Previous to enlisting he was employed at the Mersey Rail Power Station, he was a native of Rock Ferry and leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss.
