Alfred's Story.

  Alfred was born in St Thomas, Hyde, Cheshire in 1889. He lived with his father William, a cotton bobbin carrier, & his mother Mary at 88 Hyde Lane, Hyde. He had 2 brothers, William & Albert & 4 sisters, Mary, Jane, Harriet & Elizabeth. By 1901 they were living at 7 Smithy Lane, Hyde.
  Alfred enlisted in Hyde. He entered France on the 13th August 1914. He was killed in action on the 14th September 1915. He is buried at Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Pas De Calais, France. I F1.

The Battalion war diary for that day: 
  Germans exploded a mine at 4.45am. Little damage was done. At 8.30am the right company's front line was shelled by trench mortars. At 10.30pm left company was shelled by 5.9 howitzers with high explosive.
Casualties: 5 killed, 15 wounded.
