Kenneth Christopher George's Story.
Kenneth was born during the June quarter 1891 in Runcorn, the elder son of Rev. George Daniel Wray M.A and Blanche Wray (nee Wilkinson).In 1901 he is at private school, Hillcrow, Barby Road, Rugby, Warwickshire. In 1910 he enrolled at Cambridge University in the michaelmas term of 1910 having been admitted to Jesus College. He made little impression whilst at Cambridge other than being described as an 'excellent goal keeper' for the association football team. He sat no university exams and did not graduate and it seems college life was not for him. On ending his education he returns home and in 1911 aged 19 he is recorded in the census as being a Law Student and resides at the Vicarage, Thorley Lane, Timperley where his father is vicar. He joins Mssrs Robert Davies & Co., a solicitors firm in Warrington to read articles.
In May 1913 he passes his intermediate examination of the Law Society.
He joined the army in August 1914 in Warrington and was gazetted second-lieutenant in September 1914, becoming part of the South Lancashire Brigade in the West Lancashire Division. On 13/02/1915 he left the brigade and landed at Le Havre and was attached on arrival to the 7th Brigade in the 3rd Division with subsequent movements on 12/10/1915 became part of a pioneer batallion to the same division and 09/01/1916 transferred to the 55th (West Lancashire) Division. During 1915 he was wounded by shell fire at the Battle of Hooge. in the Autumn of 1915 he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
He was killed in action by shell fire leading his platoon into advance during the Battle of the Somme on August 9th 1916.
