Sergt. George Thomas Killed in Action.
Mrs. Hill, of North Road, West Kirby, has received official notification of the death of her second son Sergt. George S. Thomas. He had been posted as missing on February 17th, and it was at first hoped that he had been taken prisoner or become detached from his regiment, but the letter from the War Office states that he fell on the 17th March.
In pre-war days Sergt. Thomas was in the employ of Messrs. W. Thomas and Sons, Liverpool, with whom he preserved his apprenticeship to the mercantile marine. On the outbreak of war he held the position of third officer, and was sitting for his captain’s certificate when he answered his country’s call, and joined up in the Liverpool Scottish. In August of last year he was drafted to Mesopotamia, and at the time of his death was attached to the Machine Gun Corps. Serg. Thomas, who was only 24 years of age, has had a very adventurous career, having been shipwrecked several times and wounded once since joining the Army. A fine athlete, and very enthusiastic about his military duties, he was a great favourite with his comrade-in-arms.
