Emison's Story.
Emison had been born in Stockport and his parent lived at Mellor Street in the Portwood area of town. The 1901 Census records him, then aged 12, working part -time as a Cotton Bobbiner. In later life, he married Ada and they lived at 369 Newbridge Lane. Emison's service number indicates he enlisted into the army in late 1916. By 1917, he was attached to the Battalion's Lewis Gun Section. These were light machine guns, operated by two-man teams. The official War Diary of the 11th Cheshires makes no specific mention of the day Emison was killed. It does note that for several days the men provided carrying parties for the 171st Tunnelling Company in the area of Zillebeke Lake, to the southeast of the town centre of Ypres (now Ieper). Another local man, John Goddard was also killed the same (or previous) day in the same area. Neither have known graves.
