Ernest's Story.
Private Ernest Peers, 4th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, died on 24 July 1918 at the 8th General Hospital in France after being gassed four days earlier. He was 21 years of age and had served throughout the war with his battalion.
The brother of Mr Arthur Peers of School Lane, Hoylake, he had taken part in the Gallipoli Campaign, from which he was invalided home suffering from dysentery. After recovering, he served in Egypt before proceeding to France. During operations in July 1918 he was gassed and succumbed to his injuries on 24 July.
Before the war, Ernest had been employed as an assistant to Mr Jennings, chemist, of Market Street, Hoylake. His mother was in America at the time news of his death was received, while his father was reported to be serving in the United States Navy. His death was widely regretted in Hoylake, where he was well known and respected.
