Gallant Birkenhead Soldier
DIES OF WOUNDS
Mrs. Harris, of 37, Hilbre Street, Birkenhead, has received official intimation of the death of her husband, Pte. H. H. Harris, on the 27th ult. It seems that Pte. Harris, who was attached to the King’s (Liverpool) Regiment, received his fatal wounds during a heavy enemy bombardment. He was taken to hospital but died shortly after.
In writing to the bereaved wife the commanding officer speaks of the deceased soldier in the highest possible terms. “He always performed his duties well, and was held in the highest esteem by all ranks of his battalion.” Private Harris was a master window cleaner in civil life and was but 22 years of age, and had been in the Army for 17 months. He had been in France since last September.
The above newspaper article is reproduced word for word and reports Herbert’s death as 27th March, however official records state his death as 28th March.
